Indications

Approved Indications:

  • Contraception:
Latex Condom [Panther] is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy through a physical barrier that blocks the entry of sperm into the uterus during vaginal intercourse.
  • Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs):
Effective in reducing the risk of transmission of STIs by acting as a barrier to genital secretions and skin-to-skin contact. STIs include:
    • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
    • Chlamydia
    • Gonorrhea
    • Syphilis
    • Genital Herpes (HSV)
    • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
    • Hepatitis B and C

Clinically Accepted Uses:

  • Sexual Health Education and Demonstration Purposes:
Used in health education programs for safe sex training and condom-use demonstrations.
  • Postpartum and Postabortion Barrier Contraception:
Appropriate as a temporary contraceptive method following childbirth or abortion.
Dosage & Administration

Dosage:

  • One new condom per act of sexual intercourse (vaginal, anal, or oral).

Route of Administration:

  • External use, applied to the erect penis.

Application Instructions:

1.        Open the wrapper carefully without using sharp objects.

2.        Pinch the tip of the condom to remove trapped air and leave space for semen.

3.        Roll the condom down over the entire length of the erect penis.

4.        After ejaculation, withdraw the penis while holding the condom at the base.

5.        Dispose of the used condom in a trash bin (do not flush).

Special Populations:

  • Adolescents and adults: Safe and recommended.
  • No dose adjustments required for elderly or individuals with hepatic/renal impairment.
  • Latex allergy: Use non-latex alternatives if hypersensitivity exists.
Mechanism of Action (MOA)

Latex Condom [Panther] serves as a mechanical barrier that physically prevents the exchange of genital fluids during sexual activity. It blocks sperm from entering the vaginal canal, thereby preventing fertilization. In addition, the barrier reduces exposure to infectious agents found in semen, vaginal secretions, and mucosal tissue, significantly lowering the risk of STI transmission.

Pharmacokinetics

Not applicable.
Latex condoms are non-systemic barrier devices. They are not absorbed, metabolized, distributed, or excreted, and therefore do not possess pharmacokinetic properties.

Pregnancy Category & Lactation

Pregnancy:

  • Category N (Not classified): As a non-systemic medical device, condoms do not interact with maternal or fetal physiology and are safe for use during pregnancy.

Lactation:

  • Completely safe during breastfeeding. No risk of drug transfer into breast milk, as the condom has no systemic action.
Therapeutic Class
  • Primary Therapeutic Class: Mechanical Barrier Contraceptive
  • Subcategory: Male Latex Condom
  • Clinical Function: Dual protection—contraceptive and STI prevention
Contraindications
  • Known hypersensitivity to natural rubber latex
  • History of latex-induced allergic reactions or anaphylaxis
  • Use of damaged, expired, or improperly stored condoms
Warnings & Precautions
  • Allergic Reactions: Risk of mild to severe reactions, including itching, rash, and rarely, anaphylaxis, in latex-sensitive individuals.
  • Lubricant Compatibility: Do not use with oil-based lubricants (e.g., baby oil, petroleum jelly). Use only water-based or silicone-based lubricants.
  • Storage Caution: Exposure to heat or sunlight can degrade latex and reduce effectiveness.
  • Single Use Only: Never reuse condoms.
  • Breakage Risk: Incorrect application, insufficient lubrication, or expired products may increase risk of slippage or rupture.
Side Effects

Common:

  • Mild genital irritation or discomfort
  • Itching or redness from friction

Less Common:

  • Latex-induced contact dermatitis

Rare but Serious:

  • Anaphylactic reactions in individuals with latex hypersensitivity

Severity & Onset:

  • Reactions are generally localized and occur immediately after use in sensitive individuals.
  • Severity depends on personal sensitivity and exposure duration.
Drug Interactions

Not applicable.
As a medical device, Latex Condom [Panther] has no pharmacologic properties and does not interact with drugs, food, or alcohol.

Material Interactions:

  • Avoid oil-based lubricants (reduce material integrity)
  • Use only water-based or silicone-based lubricants
Recent Updates or Guidelines
  • WHO & CDC Guidelines: Reinforce condoms as first-line prevention for both unintended pregnancy and STIs.
  • FDA & ISO Standards: All condoms must meet ISO 4074 and FDA quality standards for safety, elasticity, and leak resistance.
  • Public Health Focus: Current health campaigns emphasize correct and consistent condom use as key to HIV and STI prevention, especially among high-risk populations.
Storage Conditions
  • Temperature Range: Store between 20°C and 30°C
  • Light and Humidity Protection: Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, high heat, or moisture
  • Handling Instructions:
    • Do not use if the packaging is damaged or the product is expired
    • Do not store in wallets or cars where heat and pressure can damage the condom
  • Shelf Life: Usually 3 to 5 years if stored properly
