Approved Indications:

• Dry Eye Syndrome (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca): Relief of burning, irritation, and discomfort caused by dryness of the eye.
• Eye Irritation Relief: Temporary relief from discomfort due to minor eye irritations or exposure to wind or sun.
• Ocular Surface Protection: Acts as a lubricant to protect the ocular surface in cases of deficient tear production.
• Post-surgical Ocular Support: Often used following ocular surgery (e.g., LASIK) to maintain corneal hydration.
• Computer Vision Syndrome: To relieve dryness and eye fatigue associated with prolonged screen time.
• Contact Lens-Related Dryness (off-label): Occasionally used prior to or after contact lens wear, as recommended by ophthalmologists.

Route of Administration: Ophthalmic (Eye drops)

Adults & Elderly:

• Instill 1–2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed, typically 3 to 6 times daily, or as directed by a physician.
• In severe dry eye, dosing may be increased up to hourly.

Pediatric Use:

• Not contraindicated, but should be used under supervision.
• Usual dosing: 1 drop in affected eye(s) as needed.

Contact Lens Users:

• Remove contact lenses before application. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.

Instructions:

• Shake well if indicated.
• Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface.
• Discard contents after the recommended period once opened (usually 30 days unless otherwise specified).

Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium (CMC) is a high molecular weight, anionic polymer that mimics mucin and stabilizes the tear film. It binds to the ocular surface and prolongs residence time, creating a protective, lubricating barrier. Glycerin is a humectant that draws water into the corneal epithelium, helping to maintain osmotic balance and reduce desiccation. Together, they provide hydration, protect epithelial cells from damage, and enhance tear film stability, thereby alleviating dry eye symptoms.

Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium and Glycerin are not systemically absorbed in clinically significant amounts following ocular administration.

• Absorption: Minimal to none through intact ocular epithelium.
• Distribution: Localized to the tear film and ocular surface.
• Metabolism: Not metabolized systemically.
• Excretion: Elimination occurs via drainage through the nasolacrimal duct.

Pregnancy:

• FDA Pregnancy Category: Not formally classified.
• Animal studies are not available, but systemic absorption is negligible. Considered safe when used as directed.

Lactation:

• Minimal systemic exposure; unlikely to pass into breast milk in significant amounts.
• Safe to use during breastfeeding.

Recommendation: Use with caution during pregnancy or lactation; consult a healthcare provider.

• Known hypersensitivity to Carboxymethylcellulose, Glycerin, or any excipients in the formulation.
• Active ocular infection (unless under supervision).

• Do not use if the solution changes color or becomes cloudy.
• Avoid contamination: Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface.
• Preservative sensitivity: Use preservative-free formulations in patients with ocular surface disease or hypersensitivity.
• Use with caution in patients with severe ocular pathology or who require frequent dosing.
• Discontinue use if eye pain, vision changes, or persistent redness or irritation occur.

Common:

• Transient blurred vision
• Mild eye irritation
• Foreign body sensation
• Watery eyes

Less Common:

• Eye redness
• Eye itching
• Discomfort at instillation site

Rare but Serious:

• Allergic conjunctivitis
• Eyelid edema or swelling

Timing & Severity:

• Most side effects are mild and occur immediately after application.
• Blurred vision is typically brief and resolves within minutes.

• No known systemic drug interactions due to minimal absorption.
• If using other ophthalmic medications (e.g., antibiotic drops, steroids), wait at least 5–10 minutes between instillations to prevent dilution.
• Use CMC + Glycerin drops last if multiple drops are being used, as they may affect absorption of other medications.

• Recent preference for preservative-free single-use units in chronic or frequent users due to risk of benzalkonium chloride toxicity.
• 2023 Guidelines from ophthalmology boards recommend artificial tears with CMC + Glycerin as first-line therapy for moderate dry eye disease.
• Newer formulations incorporate nano-emulsion technology for longer ocular retention, under evaluation.

• Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
• Protect from excessive heat, moisture, and light.
• Do not freeze.
• Discard bottle 30 days after opening unless stated otherwise by manufacturer.
• Single-dose units: Discard after one use, even if product remains.
