Indications
  • Slows progression of intermediate and advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
  • Helps reduce symptoms of dry eye syndrome by decreasing ocular inflammation.
  • Protects retinal and macular cells from oxidative damage and harmful blue light.
  • Supports prevention of cataracts by providing antioxidant protection.
  • May serve as adjunctive support in diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
  • Promotes general eye health, especially for individuals exposed to digital screens or environmental stressors.
Composition

Each softgel capsule contains-

1.      Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): 500 mg

2.      Vitamin E (as Natural d-alpha-tocopherol): 400 IU

3.      Zinc (as Zinc Oxide): 80 mg (some modern formulas use 25–40 mg for better tolerability)

4.      Copper (as Cupric Oxide): 2 mg

5.      Lutein: 10 mg

6.      Zeaxanthin: 2 mg

7.      Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA + DHA): Typically 350–1000 mg combined (amount varies by manufacturer)

Dosage & Administration
  • Take one softgel capsule daily with a meal to improve absorption of fat-soluble nutrients.
  • Suitable for adults and elderly; not recommended for children.
  • Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment; consult a healthcare professional.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use only under medical supervision.
Mechanism of Action

Combines antioxidants (vitamins C and E, lutein, zeaxanthin), essential minerals (zinc, copper), and omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA). Lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate in the macula, filtering blue light and neutralizing free radicals. Vitamins C and E protect retinal cells from oxidative damage. Zinc supports retinal enzyme function and immune health, while copper prevents zinc-induced deficiency. Omega-3 fatty acids stabilize retinal membranes and reduce inflammation.

Pharmacokinetics
  • Fat-soluble nutrients are absorbed in the presence of dietary fats.
  • Lutein and zeaxanthin concentrate in the macula; omega-3 fatty acids incorporate into retinal membranes.
  • Vitamins and minerals are metabolized primarily in the liver and excreted via urine and bile.
Pregnancy & Lactation
  • Generally safe at recommended doses; however, consult a healthcare provider before use.
  • Vitamin E should be used cautiously during pregnancy due to bleeding risk.
  • Nutrients are naturally present in breast milk and may support infant eye development.
Therapeutic Class

Ophthalmic nutritional supplement containing antioxidants, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids, based on AREDS2 formulation.

Contraindications
  • Allergy to any of the ingredients.
  • Active bleeding disorders or concurrent use of high-dose anticoagulants.
  • Wilson’s disease or other copper metabolism disorders.
  • Severe renal impairment.
Warnings & Precautions
  • Increased bleeding risk with concurrent anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy (due to vitamin E).
  • Long-term zinc use requires monitoring to prevent copper deficiency.
  • Use cautiously in patients with liver disease.
  • Discontinue use and seek medical attention if allergic reactions or unexplained symptoms occur.
Side Effects

Common: mild nausea, stomach upset, metallic taste.
Rare: allergic skin reactions, bleeding tendencies, or anemia from copper deficiency.

Drug Interactions
  • Vitamin E may increase bleeding risk when combined with anticoagulants like warfarin.
  • Zinc can impair absorption of tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics; separate doses by at least 2 hours.
  • May interfere with iron supplement absorption.
  • Absorption of fat-soluble vitamins may be reduced by bile acid sequestrants or orlistat.
Recent Guidelines and Updates
  • AREDS2 trial replaced beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin due to lung cancer risk in smokers.
  • Zinc dosage in newer supplements reduced to improve tolerance without losing efficacy.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids added in some products for additional anti-inflammatory and ocular benefits.
  • Professional ophthalmology associations recommend AREDS2 supplements for patients with intermediate AMD.
Storage Instructions
  • Store at room temperature (20–25°C).
  • Protect from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight.
  • Do not freeze.
