Mechanism of Action (MOA)

This multivitamin–mineral formula supplies essential nutrients required for DNA synthesis, cell division, neurodevelopment, red blood cell formation, bone growth, and immune function. Folic acid and B12 aid nucleic acid synthesis and prevent neural tube defects. Iron supports hemoglobin production. Calcium and vitamin D3 regulate fetal bone mineralization. Antioxidants like vitamin C and E protect maternal and fetal cells from oxidative stress. Iodine and zinc ensure proper thyroid and immune function, essential for fetal brain development.

Pharmacokinetics
  • Absorption: Water-soluble vitamins are absorbed in the small intestine via passive or active transport. Fat-soluble vitamins require bile for proper absorption. Iron and calcium absorption vary with gastric pH and food intake.
  • Distribution: Vitamins A, D, and B12 are stored in the liver; calcium and phosphorus are stored in bones; iron is stored as ferritin in tissues.
  • Metabolism: Fat-soluble vitamins undergo hepatic conversion. B-vitamins act as enzyme cofactors.
  • Excretion: Water-soluble vitamins are excreted via urine; fat-soluble vitamins are slowly eliminated. Iron is conserved with minimal excretion.
Pregnancy Category & Lactation
  • Pregnancy: Considered safe and recommended during pregnancy. Avoid high doses of preformed vitamin A. Beta-carotene form is preferred.
  • Lactation: Nutrients are excreted in breast milk in beneficial amounts. Continued use supports maternal health and infant development.
  • Caution: Excessive doses of fat-soluble vitamins (A and D) should be avoided due to risk of toxicity.
Therapeutic Class
  • Primary Class: Multivitamin–Multimineral Supplement
  • Subclass: Prenatal / Pregnancy and Lactation Formula
Contraindications
  • Known hypersensitivity to any component
  • Iron overload disorders (e.g., hemochromatosis)
  • Hypervitaminosis A or D
  • Severe renal impairment (risk of mineral accumulation)
Warnings & Precautions
  • Store out of reach of children; iron overdose is potentially fatal.
  • Excess vitamin A (from preformed sources) may cause birth defects.
  • Mineral interactions may impair absorption (e.g., calcium reduces iron uptake).
  • Monitor blood parameters if used long-term in renal/hepatic impairment.
  • Discontinue use and consult a physician if allergic reactions occur.
Side Effects
  • Common: Nausea, constipation, metallic taste, mild abdominal discomfort.
  • Occasional: Skin flushing (niacin), dark stools (iron), mild headache.
  • Rare/Serious: Allergic reactions, vitamin A or D toxicity with excessive use.
Drug Interactions
  • Iron & Calcium: May reduce absorption of some antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines, quinolones).
  • Folic Acid: May reduce effectiveness of certain anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin).
  • Mineral Overlap: Avoid concurrent use of other high-dose supplements unless supervised.
  • No major CYP enzyme interactions, but nutrient-nutrient interactions must be considered.
Recent Updates or Guidelines
  • Prenatal supplements are now routinely recommended for all women planning pregnancy or already pregnant.
  • Iodine, vitamin D, folic acid, and iron remain key ingredients in all updated prenatal guidelines.
  • Folic acid should be started preconceptionally to ensure neural tube closure in early gestation.
  • Calcium and vitamin D3 are being emphasized more for preeclampsia prevention and bone health.
Storage Conditions
  • Store below 25°C (77°F) in a dry, cool place.
  • Protect from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Do not refrigerate or freeze.
  • Keep in original packaging and tightly closed.
  • Handle with clean, dry hands to prevent contamination.
