Mechanism of Action (MOA)

Lactohil combines 23 herbs traditionally used in Ayurveda to promote lactation. Key ingredients such as Shatavari and Fenugreek contain phytoestrogens and steroidal saponins that help stimulate the release of prolactin and oxytocin — the primary hormones responsible for milk production and let-down. Herbs like Fennel, Cumin, and Aniseed provide carminative and digestive benefits, improving maternal appetite and nutrient assimilation, which indirectly support milk synthesis. Adaptogenic herbs like Ashwagandha and Vidarikand help the mother cope with postpartum fatigue and stress, promoting hormonal balance. Together, these actions enhance natural lactation pathways and maternal well-being.

Pharmacokinetics

Detailed pharmacokinetic data for Lactohil as a complete polyherbal product is not established. For individual key herbs:

  • Absorption: Active phytoestrogens and saponins are absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. Bioavailability can vary depending on diet and gut health.
  • Distribution: Herbal constituents are distributed systemically; trace amounts may appear in breast milk but are generally considered safe for the infant.
  • Metabolism: Mainly metabolized in the liver through phase I and II pathways.
  • Excretion: Primarily eliminated through urine and feces.
  • Onset: Therapeutic effect typically develops gradually over several days with regular use.
  • Half-Life: Not precisely defined for the complete blend.
Pregnancy Category & Lactation
  • Pregnancy: Not recommended during pregnancy. Some herbs in the formulation, especially Fenugreek, may stimulate uterine contractions.
  • Lactation: Considered safe for breastfeeding when used at recommended doses. Small amounts of herbal actives may pass into breast milk but have not been shown to harm healthy term infants. Always consult a physician if the baby is premature or has special medical needs.
  • Safety Note: Limited modern clinical data is available; caution and medical supervision are advised.
Therapeutic Class
  • Class: Herbal Galactagogue
  • Subclass: Ayurvedic Polyherbal Postpartum Tonic
Side Effects
  • Common: Mild bloating, gas, or diarrhea (mainly due to Fenugreek and carminative herbs).
  • Less Common: Noticeable body or urine odor resembling maple syrup (Fenugreek effect).
  • Serious (Rare): Allergic reactions such as skin rash, swelling, or anaphylaxis.
  • Timing: Side effects are generally mild and self-limiting; symptoms usually resolve when the product is stopped.
